The Saltwater Line Under Miami-Dade Moved Again
USGS published new mapping of the saltwater interface under the Biscayne aquifer in December 2025. The line moved inland north and south, and held in the east.
There is a line under Miami-Dade County that almost nobody thinks about and that governs a surprising amount of what happens above it. It is the boundary between fresh groundwater and salt water at the base of the Biscayne aquifer, and USGS has been mapping it since the 1950s. The most recent map, produced with Miami-Dade County and published in December 2025, shows where it sat in 2022.
What the map shows
USGS defines the interface using the 1,000 milligrams per litre isochlor, a line of equal chloride concentration, mapped from borehole electromagnetic induction logging alongside water sampling for chloride and specific conductance. Comparing the 2022 position with the previous mapping from 2018:
- In the north of the county, the interface had moved inland by up to 0.3 kilometers.
- In the Model Land Area in the south, it had moved inland by up to 0.8 kilometers.
- In east-central Miami-Dade, it was essentially unchanged.
That last point matters and is usually the first thing lost in summary. This is not a uniform advance. Where the county’s water management works as intended, the line holds.
Why anyone building or repairing here should care
Three connections, in increasing order of how directly they bear on a structure.
Groundwater chemistry is part of the exposure environment. Florida’s transportation structures design guidelines classify soil or water with chloride above 2,000 parts per million, or resistivity below 1,000 ohm-centimeters, as an extremely aggressive environment on its own, without any reference to how close the ocean is. Foundations, piles, and buried concrete sit in whatever the groundwater is, and inland is not automatically benign.
It is a reminder of how connected the ground here is. The Biscayne aquifer is shallow and among the most permeable aquifers anywhere. That permeability is why salt water can travel inland through it at all, and it is the same property that lets a leaking supply line under a slab move fine material out of the ground faster than intuition suggests. The mechanism behind a great deal of Miami settlement is water moving where it is not supposed to, and this aquifer moves water very well.
It affects what happens at the shoreline. Canal control structures, drainage, and pumping all interact with where that interface sits. On waterfront property those same systems are part of what determines how much water is cycling through the ground behind a seawall, which is the mechanism that hollows out waterfront lawns. What it does not mean
It does not mean anyone’s foundation is dissolving. Limestone dissolution operates on geological timescales, not on the timescale of a mortgage, and Miami-Dade’s low sinkhole incidence is well documented, covered in the sinkhole guide.
It also does not mean drinking water is imminently at risk in any particular place. The mapping exists precisely so that the county can manage the resource, and the flat result in east-central Miami-Dade is evidence that management has effect.
The wider point about local data
The reason this map is worth a blog post is that it exists at all. Miami-Dade is one of the most closely monitored pieces of ground in the United States: USGS groundwater wells, county saltwater interface mapping, a detailed USDA soil survey, published geological mapping going back decades. Almost every question a homeowner might reasonably ask about the ground under their house has a public answer somewhere.
